Frequently asked questions
What does a notary public do?
A notary public verifies the signer's identity, completes the required notarial certificate, and witnesses or acknowledges the signature as required. A notarization does not confirm that the document itself is accurate, legal, or valid.
What identification should I bring?
Each signer should bring an acceptable government-issued photo ID, such as a California driver's license, state identification card, U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card. Contact me before your appointment if you are unsure whether your identification can be accepted.
Should I sign the document before the appointment?
No. Most documents must be signed in the notary's presence, and every person whose signature is being notarized must personally appear with acceptable identification. Wait to sign until the appointment unless the receiving agency, attorney, lender, or escrow officer has told you otherwise.
Can you tell me which type of notarization I need?
A notary cannot choose the notarial act for you or provide legal advice. If your document does not clearly state whether an acknowledgment or jurat is required, please contact the document's issuing or receiving agency or an attorney before the appointment.
Can you notarize documents at hospitals or care facilities?
Yes. Mobile appointments may be available at hospitals, assisted living communities, nursing facilities, and hospice locations. The signer must be able to communicate directly with the notary, present acceptable identification, and participate without another person answering on their behalf.
